Virgin Media had launched a service called XXL some time back which provides the internet user with a downloading speed of 50 MB. The service entails a 12-month contract. It also provides unlimited downloads throughout the month without any caps. BT has recently announced a new product, called Infinity, which it plans to launch in the market soon and make it available in at least four million homes. The number of homes it will become available in will increase to 10 million within six months of the launch.

When BT compared its new product, Infinity, to XXL’s service and applauded Infinity, Virgin Broadband hit back stating that Infinity is a fibre optic product which provides internet speeds of only 40MB. BT’s service also entails an 18-month contract compared to Virgin Media’s shorter 12-month deal.

According to BT, its users will save up to £7.47 by using Infinity. However, it also provides a 20GB cap on data download per month.

As a counter to BT’s claim, Virgin Media stated via a spokesperson that there is no reason why anyone would want to wait for Infinity to be launched when they could already take advantage of XXL which is a much better service.

Virgin Media has not stopped only at this. It has also stated that it is building a new fast broadband service which will provide the user with a download speed of 200 MB. However, this product is still in the development stage and the date of its launch is also not yet determined. Market conditions have not been very good and Virgin Media wants to keep that in mind before launching its new service.

The iPhone has become the latest craze among people. Though it does not account for half the sale, it definitely accounts for half of the smartphone usage across the world.

Blackberry and Palm Pre are not as successful as iPhones, as Blackberry accounted for around 12% of the data traffic via mobile broadband while Palm Pre accounted for merely 5% of the same in October, which is 5% lesser than September. Thus, it seems that Apple’s iPhone has conquered the market, though others have not been that successful.

This was found by a mobile advertising company AdMob that did a study on the data traffic via 3G mobiles. The company checked more than fifteen thousand websites that advertise smartphones and looked at the applications for buying these phones in order to find out the popularity of different phones.

In addition to the above conclusions, the study also showed that smartphones using Google’s Android operating system have become very well known, as these phones have contributed for close to three quarter of the data traffic in October 2010, at least in the USA.

This establishes that the real guilt of clogging the network is on iPhones. Most of the other smartphones are not used so much that they can lead to congestion in the network. This congestion has been troubling mobile internet service providers who have been trying to manage the load so that subscribers can get good services.

Online piracy has been a much-debated issue for a long time now. Recently, around hundred British musicians came to a nearly unanimous decision that in order to ensure that music is not downloaded illegally, internet speeds of offenders should be reduced, so that downloading becomes difficult.

However, a new approach has been suggested by Charles Dunstone, CEO of Carphone Warehouse, who is planning to implement his idea to control piracy through the TalkTalk broadband network.

According to his idea, broadband customers could use the same strategy used in cinema for rating movies according to age. Parents can decide what kind of stuff they want their child to access, depending on the license they take for their broadband connection. TalkTalk will offer customers the option of a U, 14 or 18 certificate or an unclassified broadband connection.

If your broadband has a U or a 14 certificate, you can ensure that no file sharing will be possible on your computer. The network will also not be able to access content such as pornography and gambling. This will cut down on the illegal file sharing practised online and will reduce the rates of online piracy as well, as file sharing is the most common method of such piracy. This will also ensure that children do not have access to those sites that can damage the internet connection. This licensing system will also help the content industry by filtering sites that are BitTorrent enabled.

Substantiating reports in the news about spectrum allocation decisions, telecoms regulator, Ofcom officially declared its decision to free the 800 MHz band of broadcast spectrum for mobile broadband.

Ofcom intends to free this bit of spectrum through a move under which the airwaves will be released by a changeover to digital TV. Ofcom feels that this move would allow the UK to be more in sync with the other European nations on the issue of broadband spectrum allocation.

Initially, in the year 2003, the government had come up with plans to clear smaller segments of the spectrum. However, Ofcom has now decided to free the entire 800 MHz range to give way to the latest generation of mobile broadband services and also to stay in line with the other European nations (click compare mobile internet for the latest services). As of now, countries like Finland, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, France, Spain and Denmark have taken the initiative to free up the entire 800 MHz band, while even more countries are likely to follow suit.

Ofcom says that this move would provide cheaper equipments, greater advancement of mobile broadband services, and better competition among the service providers. The regulator also feels that these aspects would provide a benefit to the tune of £2.5 to £3 billion.

However, no deadlines have yet been set for the auction of the soon to-be freed broadband spectrum to the mobile broadband providers.

Lincolnshire businesses can now call up BT Local business on 01522 814400 and choose option 3 to sign up for BT bonded ADSL service, which will make super fast broadband available to them.

BT in association with Sharedband has come up with this new service, which will provide Lincolnshire businesses with speeds of up to four ADSL lines combined.

The service is being marketed as ideal for critical business applications like VPN (virtual private network), video conferencing, and Voice over IP.

According to Stephen heath, who is the IT manager at Househam Sprayer, a business in Lincolnshire, the service is quite impressive as they now enjoy an upstream connection of 2Mb. No other alternative offering such a high upstream speed was available to them. He also said that they were enjoying almost twice the normal download speeds. They can now assure a safe access to their network for remote offices and home users, and at the same time access to the internet has become much faster. This shows that BT’s claims of the service being ideal for businesses are not hollow. If you want to learn more about your broadband speed, try a website such a Broadband Genie.

Rural businesses can also take advantage of the service, though the download speed they would end up enjoying would be inversely proportional to the distance at which they are located from the local telephone exchange.

Technology improvements are always being made. When TV was first invented, it was a giant box that projected images in black and white and the signal was broadcast over airwaves and received through antennas. Times have changed. Now, the most common way for people to receive TV is through cable. And TVs are not only in color, but you can now receive high definition cable with a clean, crisp picture.

Cable television was revolutionary at the time and continues to improve. Originally, cable TV was used to send not only broadcast stations but also new stations only transmittable through extra fees. These stations were exciting and catered to specific groups of people including kids, teens, and adults. Cable TV is also great now because of the transmission of high definition channels and the other technologies it offers.

Cable offers TV as well as high speed internet connections and digital phone lines. What’s interesting about cable TV is that now there is competition. Satellite dishes have become smaller in size and cheaper to produce. The signals are cheap to broadcast and the satellites in space are almost maintenance free. With cable, the company has to run lines to every house and maintain those lines somewhat frequently. The two continue to compete for business and both offer pros and cons. Cable TV can be more expensive, but offers an almost flawless picture always with the aid of digital cable boxes. Satellite TV is often cheaper, but the signal sometimes can be fuzzy in bad weather. However, new technologies are improving this.

Overall, cable TV offers a better value as there is no equipment that has to be set up outside like an unsightly satellite dish no matter how small it is. Also, the small box that most cable companies require is stored inside by the TV and often offers additional features such as a guide to what is on TV and localized stations for public television.

Are you thinking of getting into VoIP? Do you have trouble making head nor tail of all the associated terms? Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology is being tipped as the technology that will restructure telecoms forever. VoIP digitises the sound of a human voice so that it can be routed through the Internet. You can now make VoIP phone calls that cost a tiny amount of calls made through the traditional phone line. It is revolutionizing the way that people keep in contact.

However, as often occurs with new technologies, it is occasionally hard to make sense of what all the new terms and jargon involved mean. As an answer to this this article will try and make sense of the technical terms. So let’s get started on deciphering some of the jargon

? Bit rate: This is the speed at which data moves across the Internet. The term can also be used as a measure of the speed of an Internet connection which is often quantified in kilobits or megabits per second.

? Broadband: This is a generic term for high speed Internet over cable or ADSL

? Ethernet: This is the standard that is used for most office networks as well as the networking system that is often found in PCs and routers

? Router: This is networking hardware device that “steers” data across a network or across the Internet. A router is needed to share an Internet connection between multiple devices

? Softphone: A softphone is a computer application that is used to provide telephony functions. It is often used in conjunction with a headset

Hopefully by explaining and simplifying some of the terminology that surrounds the VoIP services this article should help clarify what VoIP is about and the elements that are involved. Find the service that is right for you. Join the VoIP revolution and start enjoying cheap calls and other cool services!
