Sydney Botulinum injections (Botox for short) is now fashionable amongst trendy Sydney society and has become a grooming necessity for those in Sydney.
Yet I am frequently stunned when I hear the rumours in connection with this procedure.
Here I have included some of the myths frequently heard at Star Cosmetic Medicine in Pyrmont, Sydney.
Error no. 1: I could lose the ability to express emotion!
Research has found there are sixty or so muscles in the human face. These ordinarily work in harmony, but over a period of time expression lines can appear. When an excess of Botox has been used the muscles of expression can sometimes become less expressive. The dosage injected by most physicians are calculated to make you appear well rested, but still you will always maintain your natural expression.
Thus a carefully measured amount of Botox in the proper site means one should have a smoothing of any lines without reducing facial expression.
Error no. 2: Botulinum is a poison!
This to some extent is true. Its medical name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. An overdose may relax facial muscles that you do not want relaxed or may even make one very sick.
Pharmacists have a well-known saying that states ‘everything is a poison – all depending on the dose’. A large amount of any medicinal drug can cause illness. If you drink too great a quantity of water it can be fatal.
Error no. 3: Botox hurts!
At Star Cosmetic Medicine the doctor will use needles finer than a human hair. Some people liken the injections to being bitten by mosquitoes. For Certain not as bad as getting a regular shot.
Error no. 4: My face will be less sensitive!
Not true. Botulinum medicine works on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, and not on the nerves of sensation. Botox just affects the relaxation of muscular tissues.
Error no. 5. You must keep getting Botox or else you will develop even worse wrinkles than earlier!
This is also untrue.
BoTox is expected to be effective for up to three months. Any injections after the first visit usually last a few weeks more. The wrinkles will eventually return as the muscle regains its strength. But they will definitely not be any more pronounced than before.
As A Matter Of Fact the wrinkles should be be less noticeable than if you had never had Botox injections – even if you don’t continue the injections. This, of course is obviously so due to the fact your facial muscles and skin have had a rest whilst the treatment was active.
