Where did the game of online poker first start? How did it come to be considered a staple of American frontier legend? Poker is thought to have its origins in France, where a three-card game called “Poque” was played. The game is also similar to a Persian card game, called “As Nas” which used 25 cards with five suits. The Persian game had betting and hand rankings that are similar to the game of poker played today. The traditional form of online poker familiar to most players was played in the city of New Orleans in the US as early as the beginning on the 19 century. The game as we know it today is most likely derived from both Poque and As Nas. It is believed that the name “poker” evolved from the American west dialect that turned “Poque” into poker. Poker traveled up the Mississippi River from New Orleans on the steamboats, where gamblers often plied their trade. Eventually, it spread across the west, and became popular in saloons, gambling halls and private homes. The 52-card deck came into existence in the 1830s. The game itself has evolved from a basic format, five-card draw, to many variations, such as Texas Hold ‘Em, Stud, and Omaha poker online . The first World Series of Poker took place in 1970 in Las Vegas. Poker is now played all over the world and its enthusiasts have access to the game just about anywhere with online poker rooms.
