Hairspray is the story of a cheery schoolgirl named Tracy Turnblad, an aspiring dancer who hopes to gain a position on a local telly programme called the Corny Collins Show. The programme is really based on a Baltimore-based telly show called the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland.
Tracy is unfamiliar in the dancing world when she tries out, regardless she is selected for one of the dancing roles and against very long odds she becomes a dancing icon virtually overnight. Tracy is pleased by this new celebrity status, & she decides to utilise her fame to bring about positive improvements to the television program. The primary grounds behind these positive improvements involves race. Tracy aims to racially fuse the program, and as anyone might well guess, she is met with plenty of antagonism
Hairspray set up shop in the West End in London in two thousand & seven, opening for first previews at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October eleventh, before being unveiled to the general public at its main opening on October 30, two-thousand and seven. The theatrical play has included some popular named actors — Michael Ball plays one of the lead roles as Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s mother, giving a very credible performance in this testing female role, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop property-owner Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the London West End also includes newcomer to the theatre stage, Leanne Jones, in the leading part of Tracy.
Hairspray the musical play has received a lot of upbeat reviews from journalists & musical theatre goers alike. Jacqueline said: “I have been 4 times up to now and I will be going back at some point next week & a few more times also. I love the show & wish they could stay on a great deal longer. Ben Ellis is remarkable as link & Leanne Jones as Tracey & Michael Ball, well they are all simply terrific. The play hairspray is with out doubt my favourite, basically because it is optimistic and if you are feeling depressed then it will make you feel a whole lot happier.
