Nobody predicted the recession, but it’s here, and we’re well encumbered in an economic slowdown. You may even be recently unemployed. You can turn off the radio, but you can’t escape the actuality that the UK is in a deep recession and it will be with us for a good few years yet.

So what to do? The conventional means of looking for a job are not so good when you have 100 other job seekers applying for the same job position. Reading the newspaper, going to the dole bureau, etc – best of luck with all of that.

Much more effective is to become proactive in areas your competition (the unemployed) are less likely to be active in. Nowadays a lot of firms publish work placements on their website, so use a search engine and enter key words to target local companies. Vary your keywords between locale only e.g. jobs Staffordshire UK, and locale and profession e.g. helpdesk jobs in Tamworth Staffordshire.

Another idea is to go it alone – become self-employed. What we’ve discovered over the last year or so is that large firms can go bankrupt overnight. Self-employment means you control your own destiny, which is something no staff worker of a firm can ever say they have. The main thing is you choose the type of job you love as you must motivate yourself everyday.
